The City of Tempe is considering extending anti-discrimination protections to cover “hair texture” and styles.
The move looks to protect African Americans and others from being discriminated against because of their hairstyles including “braids, locks, twists and knots” for jobs, housing and public accommodations, according to an ordinance being considered by the Tempe City Council.
The council will look at the issue at its Oct. 14 meeting.
Tempe already offers local discrimination protections based on race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, familial status, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation and veteran status.
The council is also scheduled to hold a second hearing on the hair anti-discrimination ordinance on Nov. 9.
