Robert McWhirter, a candidate in the Democratic primary for Arizona attorney general, has dropped out of the race. He’s the first to leave the contest after the Jan. 15 deadline to disclose 2021 fundraising totals to the secretary of state.

“While a combination of factors has contributed to this decision, the biggest factor is knowing that no matter what, a Democrat must be the next attorney general. But, I will not be that Democrat,” McWhirter wrote in an email, adding that he will “fully support whoever the nominee is in this race.”

The campaign declined to comment further on his reasons for dropping out.

The civil rights attorney had raised approximately $76,000 as of Dec. 31. He had spent approximately $26,000 and had approximately $50,000 remaining.
