SUPERIOR — It has now been just over a year since the U.S. Forest Service released, then quickly rescinded, a Final Environmental Impact Statement regarding the proposed Resolution Copper mine at Oak Flat, just west of Superior.
On Feb. 10, talks began again between the USFS and San Carlos Apache representatives over the impact of the mine, which would use a block caving method and leave a large crater at the site of Oak Flat.
As water shortages have triggered concern across the Southwest, opponents of the mine — a public poll released last fall suggests this may be a majority of Arizonans — continue to cite environmental concerns as well the site’s religious significance to local Apache tribes, who refer to the land as Chi’chil Bildagoteel.
