For far too long, members of the Surprise Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission felt city leaders gave short shrift to badly needed parks and pools across the city.
But with economic times not so bad for the city, plans have never been more clear for a new regional park and competition pool.
“We’re thrilled that parks is a priority,” Parks and Recreation Department Director Holly Osborn told the Surprise City Council on May 17.
Parks projects — including a new regional park, a competitive swimming pool and upgrades to existing parks — are part of a series of capital improvement projects the city council is prioritizing over the next five years.
That is getting the parks commission excited. It met in a special meeting May 12 that even brought out City Manager Bob Wingenroth to speak.
