Children that develop a love of reading at an early age benefit immensely throughout their lives. Maricopa County has a great summer reading program for people of all ages, including students and their families; even children as young as infants are eligible to join and earn points when someone reads to them. Learning to read and helping others learn to read is a powerful way to strengthen individuals, families, and ultimately communities. Maricopa County’s Summer Reading Program starts on June 1st. In May the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors worked to offset inflation’s harmful effects by approving a tentative fiscal year 2023 budget. This budget aims to blunt the impact of high inflation by including the largest property tax cut in Maricopa County history. Full Article

Falcon Field Visit and Tour
I was fortunate to spend some time with Airport Director Corinne Nystrom, her staff and others who help make the City of Mesa’s Falcon Field one of the busiest general aviation airports in the nation. For Further Remarks

Homes for Heroes
Congratulations to Building Homes for Heroes who provide mortgage-free homes to injured veterans and their families. I joined the Mesa City Council while we welcomed an injured veteran and his family as they were surprised with the keys to a beautiful new home. I was excited to see the faces of this local hero and his family as they were presented with this wonderful gift as a token of the community’s gratitude for their sacrifices. Apache Junction Mayor Chip Wilson
I was fortunate to have a great visit with Mayor Chip Wilson as we discussed the challenges and goals of the City of Apache Junction.
Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation Tour & Visit
I had a wonderful visit to the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation this past week. I met with President Bernadine Burnette, Vice President Paul Russell and staff members. They graciously showed me how they are developing the resources of the Tribal Nation to strengthen and enliven the community. We discussed concerns facing the Nation and how best the county can support their efforts. Our visit was informative and productive. Did you know there’s a good chance the pecans you enjoy were grown right there on their farm along the Verde River?
Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Scottsdale Visit
President Martin Harvier and his staff treated me to a beautiful and insightful tour of their community. I was able to see the wild horses they protect and care for and to tour the new River People Health Center. A real highlight of the visit was sitting down with President Harvier and several council members to listen to their concerns and discuss the county’s supporting role in their efforts to enhance their community. I look forward to many more visits to come!

The free green waste drop-off events are intended to assist residents in developing necessary defensible space around their homes and other structures that could fuel fires. Make a note of what items will be accepted at no charge and what items you will have to pay for to drop off.

Historic Tax Cut
Buying a home or renting an apartment has become increasingly difficult in Maricopa County. Additionally, the number of people experiencing homelessness has grown and includes people of all ages. This budget addresses housing insecurity issues through new and existing projects, including cutting the tax rate for all property owners. Getting our arms around the housing crisis is necessary to ensure our economy works for everyone.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved a tentative fiscal year 2023 budget to address the rising cost of goods and services. The budget:
- Cuts the property tax rate
- Pays down pension debts
- Invests in affordable housing, workforce development, and more
Summer Reading Program is Here!
65 libraries across the County are gearing up for Summer Reading as Maricopa County Reads begins June 1 at MaricopaCountyReads.org (English) or CondadoDeMaricopaLee.org (Spanish). With a community goal of 50 million minutes read, Maricopa County Reads is one of the county’s largest literacy efforts and plays a vital role in reducing learning loss while transitioning between school years.
While the program targets school age students this program is for all of us. Make this summer special by reading and earning prizes together! Begin your voyage on June 1st as Maricopa County Reads explores the stories of the ocean. Earn points by reading, conquering challenges, and attending events at your library! Prizes include books, food, park passes, and more! Sign up at MaricopaCountyReads.org. Don’t forget that on June 1st you will be able to enter Supervisor Galvin’s secret code for 10 bonus points.
