Secretary of state candidate Reginald Bolding/Gage Skidmore

After secretary of state candidate Reginald Bolding was questioned about whether a nonprofit he runs was improperly supporting his campaign, he pointed to a written agreement to show he wasn’t involved in any of the organization’s political decisions.
That document, called a “firewall” agreement, is dated June 14, 2021 — the day Bolding declared he was running for the Democratic nomination for secretary of state. Another line in the document states it was updated exactly one year later.
However, background data included with the document that Bolding provided to The Arizona Republic show it was actually created June 14 of this year and modified earlier this month.
The distinction is important because state law bars coordination between an independent expenditure campaign, which Our Voice Our Vote runs, and the candidates who benefit from the spending.
