Public hearings scheduled for expanding I-10

By Mike Sunnucks | Rose Law Group Reporter

A series of public meetings are scheduled in September and October on the planned widening of Interstate 10 in the Wild Horse Pass Corridor — a 26-mile stretch between Phoenix and Casa Grande.

Areas of the East Valley and Pinal County have seen   population and job growth and I-10 connects Tucson to Phoenix and California to the west.

A draft environmental assessment and design report outlines expanding and modifying interchanges and crossroads along the I-10 between the Loop 202 freeway and State Route 387.

Much of the I-10 segment is within the Gila River Indian Community.

The corridor expansion is being looked at by the tribe along with the Arizona Department of Transportation, U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Federal Highway Administration and Maricopa Association of Governments.

The proposed improvements would widen the busy freeway stretch from two to three lanes, HOV lanes from the Loop 202 to Riggs Road and modifying interchanges and replacing I-10 bridges over the Gila River.

The environmental assessment and design report are open to public comments through Oct. 9.
