Resident opposition to the Truman Ranch Marketplace affordable housing project in southwestern Surprise did not evaporate following a split 4-3 city council approval on Aug. 16.
One way to test if the opposition to the Minnesota-based Dominium Inc. plan to build up to 601 units south of Waddell Road between 171st and 175th avenues had only grown during the past month is if residents submit enough valid petitions to force a referendum and citywide vote on the plan.
Led by those active on the Voice of Surprise website — established in opposition of the Dominium proposal in 2021 — the referendum petition drive may end with the submission of signatures Wednesday, Sept. 14. To trigger a referendum, signatures must be gathered and submitted within 30 days of the official ordinance approval.
While Surprise said the formal approval date of the ordinance on the Truman Ranch Marketplace plan was Aug. 18, resident Quintus Schulzke said Thursday, Sept. 15, will be 30 days since the council vote so the goal is to turn in petitions the day before just in case.
