CASA GRANDE — Arizona Sonoran Copper Company and its operations at Cactus Mine are ending the calendar year on a high after receiving an award for environmental workplace strategies.
Arizona Sonoran received the 2022 award for environmental excellence from American Exploration & Mining Association at its annual meeting held in Reno, Nevada, Thursday.
The award follows the company’s major announcement in October regarding the discovery of a high-grade copper deposit estimated at 2.92 billion pounds.
Chief Operations Officer Ian McMullan told PinalCentral that the association traditionally likes to award folks who are taking the extra step to do things that are above and beyond environmental standards and sustainability and was honored that the company had received the award.
“Obviously we’re absolutely thrilled to be recognized for this award, not just because it was the right thing to do, but given the size of our company and where we’re at in the development of Stage Two. To receive an award like this as we continue to develop the project, it’s very meaningful,” McMullan said.
The mine on the northwestern edge of Casa Grande was developed and operated by Asarco decades ago and then closed.
