Randy Miller choked up as he took to the podium at the ribbon cutting for Bell Bank Park, the sprawling youth sports facility on the eastern edge of Mesa that he had envisioned for decades.
“I want to welcome you all to Bell Bank Park, personally,” he said, on that chilly February 2022 day while tapping his chest with an open hand. “I do take this very personally, because this has been a passion of mine for many years.”
Miller thanked his family and the associates who stuck with him even when he doubted himself. He thanked the lawyer who had been with him through the years as deal after deal collapsed.
Miller told the crowd that some of the people who had agreed to fund his dream were “doing prison time right now.” It was a statement with a bit of hyperbole. Two of the men had not yet served their time.
