Arizona’s five House Democrats hailed Thursday’s passage of sweeping immigration reform in the Senate, calling it a “historic” step forward and a solution to a burden the state has shouldered for years.
The state’s four House Republicans, meanwhile, were more subdued in their response, with U.S. Reps. Matt Salmon of Mesa and Paul Gosar of Prescott criticizing the bill and none praising it.
“I can’t support anything in good conscience that doesn’t guarantee first and foremost a secure border,” Salmon said, dismissing the Senate’s late addition of major Border Patrol resources in an effort to attract more Republican votes.
