What Katie Hobbs needs to become Arizona’s undisputed governor

Opinion: Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs needs a chief of staff who can bring to the Ninth Floor what she does not yet have: Gravitas.

Gov. Katie Hobbs is expected to choose a new chief of staff this week.

When she does, she’ll need someone who brings to the Ninth Floor what Hobbs, herself, could not.

Gravitas.

Gravitas is the Latin word for heft, a combination of weightiness and seriousness that will not be trifled with.

A political leader who wins the governor’s office usually enjoys a surge in gravitas, but Katie Hobbs did not win the governor’s office. She stepped aside and watched Kari Lake lose it.

At least that’s how the mayflies who flit about the Capitol see it.

Democrats wondered who was really governor

Now, less than halfway through her first year, Hobbs has moved on from her chief of staff, Allie Bones.

The first sign that Bones was on the chopping block surfaced almost immediately after the governor announced she’d struck a budget deal.

Legislative Democrats began to murmur they were cut out of negotiations between Hobbs and Republican leaders.
