San Tan Regional Park: A tale of 2 counties

In Part 1 we discussed how San Tan Mountain Regional Park is located within Pinal County, but is owned by BLM and has been managed and maintained by Maricopa County Regional Parks System for the last 25 years.

With that agreement nearing expiration and up for review this fall, we also touched on the recent moves by Pinal County Supervisors who unanimously approved a line item budget for the creation of an Open Space and Trails Department in Pinal County with staff on June 19, 2013.

The creation of such a department would enable Pinal County to move forward with plans and recommendations made by organizations and volunteer committees such as the Pinal Partnership and the Open Space and Trails Committee who have dedicated years of study and work towards this opportunity.

This is the first recommended step in a process that could return control of San Tan Mountain Regional Park to Pinal County as outlined in the committee’s report, “Pinal County Open Space Initiative: Next Step Priorities and Recommendations.”
