The State Bar of Arizona has opened an investigation into an anonymous complaint that Phoenix council candidate Lawrence Robinson has improperly portrayed himself as a licensed attorney in the state.
Robinson, a licensed attorney in New York, has on several occasions referred to himself as a “staff attorney” for employers in Arizona. State law generally prohibits attorneys from practicing if they have not passed the Arizona bar exam.
There are, however, some exceptions under the law. Most commonly, in-house attorneys, who only give legal advice to an employer, do not need to pass the state bar as long as they remain licensed in another state, register with the Arizona bar and meet a few other requirements.
