FLORENCE — Gov. Katie Hobbs broke ground Wednesday for a new 2,000-acre solar farm on state land 10 miles north of downtown Florence and praised Arizona’s rural areas for hosting the state’s biggest renewable energy projects.
“Potential for growth and prosperity outside of Phoenix and Tucson is immense, and as of now, largely untapped. Thankfully, companies like BrightNight are noticing that too, and I am so pleased to have our rural communities continue to play a role in our energy future,” Hobbs said. “This monumental project will generate up to 300 megawatts of safe, reliable and affordable electricity — not only that, but it will have huge economic impacts.”
BrightNight’s Box Canyon solar project will be among the largest in Pinal County when it becomes operational in 2025. Erik Ellis, vice president and manager of BrightNight’s Southwest region, said it will power 70,000 homes.
