The battle over where to put additional parking in downtown Scottsdale may be coming to a close.
City councilmembers appear to have come to a compromise when it comes to the question of where to build a new parking garage, in the northeast quadrant or the southeast quadrant of downtown.
They’re going to build them both.
The lack of parking in downtown has been a hot button issue for years, and city leaders put in the 2019 bond issue $20.9 million to build a new parking garage.
The ballot language said the parking garage would go somewhere downtown, but a fact sheet supporting the bond listed three possible locations, all of which where south of Indian School.
Some community members feel building a parking garage anywhere but in one of those three example spots would be a “bait and switch;” however, as time has gone along some councilmembers have felt the greater need for additional parking is north of Indian School Road – where the bars and restaurants are generating more need.
That ultimately led Scottsdale Public Works Director Dan Worth to come up with a propsal to build garages in both the northeast and southeast quadrants during the council’s April 16 meeting.
Specifically he proposed building garages at First and Brown avenues and Stetson Drive and Sixth Avenue.
