In an effort to minimize the impact of a new state law that forces municipalities to allow more “middle housing” on single-family lots, Gilbert Council has adopted a Central Business District.
House Bill 2721, prevents municipalities from blocking so-called “middle housing” – duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes and townhomes – virtually anywhere regardless of zoning.
During a council meeting earlier this month, Intergovernmental Relations Director Rob Bohr and Principal Planner Ashlee MacDonald explained that unless the Central Business District became effective before Jan. 1, middle housing development would be allowed anywhere in Gilbert on all single-family residential lots without limitations.
