CG apartment item leads to discussion of oversupply

CASA GRANDE — Passage of a major site plan for a 278-unit multifamily development on 25 acres on Earley Road at Thursday’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting brought discussion of the large supply of apartments in the Casa Grande area.

During deliberation and discussion on the Horizon Homesteads multifamily development, city planning staff, commissioners and a local real estate agent all voiced a view that the city is well over the numbers required to meet housing demands.

In his explanation to the commission regarding a major site plan request made by Scottsdale-based firm Dominium, City Planner James Gagliardi said current housing supply is high. A plan has the city’s 2023 to 2030 build-to-rent number set at 840, with the actual 2023 number of  at 3,218.
