The Florence Planning & Zoning Commission recommended in favor of rezoning more than 600 acres on the south side of the Gila River to the town’s unique “Territory Square,” or TS, zoning district, amid concerns from a citizen and the panel’s chairman.

Lina Austin asked the commission what will happen to her and other First Street property owners, who according to current maps are excluded from TS.

“My back yard would abut the project … will my property value plummet to nothing?” she asked. She asked the commission to delay its vote.

Commission Chairman Jeff Wooley said he needed more clarification on what could occur on “transition property,” and voted “no.” The other members present voted “yes” for a 3-1 vote for approval. Vice chair Larry Putrick was absent. The rezoning now goes to the Town Council for final approval.
