Gov. Katie Hobbs appointed her longtime go-to counsel D. Andrew “Andy” Gaona to the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division One, on Friday, filling the vacancy left by Judge Paul McMurdie.
As a partner at Coppersmith Brockelman, Gaona has primarily practiced election law.
He served as Hobbs’ counsel in post-election litigation, taking on 11 cases related to the 2020 general election and five in 2022.
Gaona continued to represent Hobbs and state agencies in court on a myriad of issues, ranging from director nominations to administrative cannabis law.
Besides Hobbs, Gaona advises candidates, political action committees, political parties, nonprofits, and local and state governments on campaign finance, ballot access and election mechanics.
