Mayor Nancy Smith gave her annual State of the City address Feb. 11 to a gathered crowd of community figures, elected officials, and everyday citizens in the auditorium at Desert Sunrise High School, covering a wide variety of topics about the city’s past, present, and future.
The theme of this year’s address was “Writing Maricopa’s Story: The choices we make today are the tales we’ll tell tomorrow,” and Smith aimed to illustrate said story with the successes of the past year, plans for the future, and acknowledgements of a few of Maricopa’s most remarkable residents.
“Tonight’s theme … is intentional because stories aren’t written in a single chapter, they build over time. The truth is, the choices this city made 5, 10, even 20 years ago are the very reason we are standing or sitting where we are today. Along the way, there have been adjustments and tweaks to keep the city on track, and that’s where the magic really happens. If you think about it, even the most iconic movies and books are edited. Some in the final hour,” said Smith in her address. “One choice makes a ripple effect. The roads we built, the safety we prioritized, the investments we made in parks, infrastructure, and community, those decisions are the prequel to the Maricopa we know now.”
