The Trump administration is reshaping immigration courts nationwide, drawing scrutiny from immigration attorneys over the independence of judges and the fairness of the system.
Darius Amiri, a partner and chair at the Rose Law Group, said immigration courts have faced a serious backlog of cases for years, with not enough judges to handle them.
The Trump administration began a campaign to hire more judges to reduce the caseload last year. Arizona’s Family confirmed more than 2,000 people have applied so far.
“This administration is definitely prioritizing immigration and especially immigration enforcement,” Amiri said.
At the same time, nearly 100 immigration judges were fired last year by the Department of Justice. Others who were not let go resigned.
“But we’re also firing judges that we don’t agree with their opinions — kind of, you’re talking out of both sides of your mouth there,” Amiri said.
