Five things to watch this week at the Capitol

As the legislative session approaches its 100th day, lawmakers are continuing to debate and vote on bills in spite of Gov. Katie Hobbs’ promise to veto all measures that cross her desk until Republicans publicly reveal their budget.

Republican lawmakers previously said they would pivot to advancing amended bills and exchanging them between chambers instead of flooding the governor’s desk with legislation.

In the meantime, they’ll also be working to reach a balanced budget proposal in order to kickstart negotiations with Hobbs and end the bill moratorium.

In other news, Hobbs is hoping her second nominee to lead the Arizona Department of Housing will fare better than her first during the Senate Director Nominations Committee hearing on Monday.

Here are five things to watch this week:

Senate DINO returns to vet state Housing Department director nominee

The Senate Director Nominations Committee met Monday morning to consider Gov. Katie Hobbs’ second nominee to lead the Arizona Department of Housing. Ruby Dhillon-Williams has been serving as ADOH’s interim director since March 2025, after the Senate rejected the nomination of her predecessor, Joan Serviss. Dhillon-Williams’ nomination could go before the full Senate later this week regardless of whether she passes muster with DINO.
