Arizona governor signs bill to crack down on squatters, outline eviction process

A newly signed bill will give homeowners more recourse to reclaim property from squatters.

Gov. Katie Hobbs signed Sen. Wendy Rogers’ Senate Bill 1426Track on Friday, outlining the latest conditions that constitute an eviction lawsuit, such as an unauthorized person unlawfully occupying the property after being directed to leave by the owner. The bill will also make it easier for homeowners to evict people who did not have a prior verbal or written agreement to cohabitate on the property.

This was Rogers’ third attempt at the bill since she’s been at the Legislature, she said today at a press conference.

“Arizona is sending a clear message. Unlawful occupation of someone else’s property will not be tolerated,” she said.
