Residents line up against plans for Glendale casino

The Glendale City Council chambers this week was a verbal battleground over the Tohono O’odham Nation’s proposed casino near the Westgate Entertainment District.

Some residents on Tuesday, Nov. 26, lambasted council members for wasting money opposing the plans, while others urged them to keep up the fight.

Council critics were further incensed when the council accepted nearly a half-million dollars to purchase a new fire truck from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, a Valley tribe fighting the Tohono O’odham.

“Now, doesn’t accepting this grant look like a conflict of interest when this same tribe is trying to keep another tribe, the Tohono O’odham, from building a casino on a county island, neighboring Glendale?” resident Ken Sturgis said.
