Yuma County supervisors asking for property tax increase

A Yuma County supervisor’s proposal to collect a half-million dollars more in property taxes sparked debate among the board members and prompted the chairman to call the measure “disturbing.”

Noting that the county’s cash reserves are declining year to year, Vice Chairman Russell McCloud suggested the board reverse the downward trend by raising the property tax levy by $500,000.

“There was a lot of focus on the (property tax) rate but not much focus on the levy,” he said, adding, “If we don’t reverse that this year, what is the plan? … I don’t think revenues will increase over our obligations.”
