Peoria officials used taxpayer money to help fund a shadowy opposition campaign against large billboards proposed in Glendale along the cities’ border, according to city records.
Glendale officials, who learned of the campaign in September, met last week on whether to reconsider the proposal from Becker Boards for 85-foot-tall signs northwest of Loop 101 and Bell Road. There was no consensus for a new vote. The Glendale City Council voted against the billboards this spring after an opposition effort that included robo-calls and 4,500 leaflets distributed to residents in both cities.
Peoria spent $3,500 to hire a consultant to work against the billboards and to meet with city residents in the area.
