Glendale tosses petition seeking to force recall of councilman

The City Clerk’s Office has dismissed a petition by a private group seeking to force a recall election against Councilman Gary Sherwood.

The document filed Friday, Dec. 19, by the Recall Councilman Gary Sherwood Committee failed to state whether the signature-gathering was overseen by volunteers or a paid contractor.

“The form itself was incorrect,” said City Clerk Pam Hanna, whose office began validating the petition’s more than 6,000 signatures Friday. During the course of the process, Hanna said staffers noticed the volunteer/paid designation missing from the petition form and asked the office of City Attorney Michael Bailey whether that made the petition itself invalid. Hanna said Bailey’s office gave the clerk’s staff its opinion Tuesday morning, and the petitions were declared invalid.
