Flagstaff council objects to ’empty building tax’

Flagstaff City Council sent back to staff a Community Reinvestment Plan last week after several council members objected to an “empty building tax” proposed by staff.

The plan would give staff guidance on how to encourage infill and redevelopment projects in the city.

The “empty building tax” would charge property owners for buildings that are not under construction and have been unoccupied for a long period of time.

In a rare moment, both Vice Mayor Celia Barotz and Councilmember Jeff Oravits agreed that the tax should be removed from the plan.
