A Glendale businessman supported by a recall committee plans to challenge Councilman Gary Sherwood in the November recall election, reports Peter Corbett of The Arizona Republic.

Ray Malnar, 59, who owns a flooring-maintenance business, announced his candidacy Wednesday for the Sahuaro District council seat Sherwood has held since 2012.

Malnar is board chairman of the Western Maricopa Education Center, a public school district that provides technical training to high-school students.

He is the first announced candidate to challenge Sherwood, who was targeted for recall last summer after he supported a $26 million agreement with the Tohono O’odham Nation for a tribal casino on the Glendale-Peoria border.
