Questions raised about 5 councilmembers attending Latino conference in Washington

A public hearing last week on Eloy’s budget and proposed property tax increase became heated after a couple of residents, along with a councilman, questioned the city council’s use of funds to attend a conference in Washington D.C. One councilman said the complaints had racist overtones.
While the June 30 hearing was supposed to be about the 2016-17 fiscal year budget, the biggest point of contention was expenses made in the 2015-16 fiscal year when five councilmen attended the National Association of Latino Elected Officials conference in June. The total travel expenses, which were budgeted a year earlier, came to roughly $12,000.
