Lot sizes for new single-family homes are continuing to shrink. The median lot size of a home sold in 2015 fell under 8,600 square feet for the first time since the Census Bureau started tracking lot sizes. The current median lot size is just under one-fifth of an acre.
Lot sizes vary considerably among different regions of the country, however. For example, “the Pacific division where densities are high and developed land is scarce has the smallest lots, with half of the lots being under 0.15 acres,” the National Association of Home Builders reports on its Eye on Housing blog.
