Gila River tribe to appeal court decision on Loop 202 construction

The Gila River Indian Community is appealing a federal district court’s upholding South Mountain Freeway environmental documents.

The GRIC Community Council, the tribe’s governing body, voted to take the action to protect sacred lands it says will be desecrated by the construction of the freeway.

ADOT has shortlisted three groups for the upcoming Loop 202 South Mountain extension, which will connect Interstate 10 in the West Valley to the freeway in the East Valley.
