A slew of schoolyard-style attacks and insults — including names like the “Great Satan” and “Baghdad Bob” — are flying in an unusually-personal campaign battle for Scottsdale mayor, the Valley’s highest-profile municipal race this fall.
Scottsdale voters likely will have several issues in mind as they head to the polls Nov. 8, including the direction of future development and controversial plans for a Desert Discovery Center. But a war of personality has at times overshadowed substantive policy discussion ahead of the election.
As incumbent Mayor Jim Lane and challenger Bob Littlefield face off in local debates and through social media, many observers have noted the campaign’s unusually personal, negative tone.
