Drinking water from Johnson Utilities meets the federal standard for nitrate levels and is safe for infants to consume, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality announced Tuesday evening.
In a statement, ADEQ said it had received confirmation from Johnson Utilities that a water sample collected Nov. 30 “demonstrated the nitrate level met the federal drinking water standard” and that the sample “was analyzed using certified analytical methods.”
ADEQ on Friday warned Johnson Utilities’ customers in Pinal County that high levels of nitrates in water made it unsafe for infants to drink. This was done, according to an ADEQ official, because Johnson Utilities had not responded to ADEQ inquiries about whether the company had told customers of water concerns after samples taken in recent months showed higher-than-acceptable concentrations of nitrate.
