For much of Mesa’s early history, residents bought their groceries at mom-and-pop stores. Corner markets abounded.

When I moved into my neighborhood in the late 1960s three independent groceries were all within walking distance.

Of course there were larger stores — Wright’s Market, Bashas’ and Bayless.
