Eastern Arizona wildfire continues to grow, now burned 24,000-plus acres

Firefighters continued to work Friday to contain a wildfire that had burned through more than 24,000 acres in eastern Arizona in two weeks.

The Rattlesnake Fire had grown to 24,273 acres and had spread to the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, San Carlos Indian Reservation and the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests.

It was about 46 percent contained.

There were also nearly 600 firefighters on the ground.

The cause of the fire was unknown. It was once believed to be human-caused and was under investigation, but it was unclear whether the investigation was continuing.
