[OPINION] Our View: If you build ballfields, they will come

It’s a truism that many Flagstaff residents first came for the Grand Canyon but they stay for all the other recreation that the city offers.

And with four-seasons, crystal blue skies and pristine air (outside controlled burn season), it doesn’t get much better anywhere.

But Flagstaff continues to grow, and along with more housing and transportation capacity, that means a need for more recreation facilities.

Over at the baseball and softball little leagues, the crunch comes to a head after Memorial Day when the adult softball leagues – with nearly 400 teams drawing 15,000 players from all over the region – start their summer schedules. Throw in the youth and adult soccer leagues and the summer club baseball teams, and as we report today on the front page, the city has a playing field crunch on its hands.
