Per the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, there are currently 132 “supertall” skyscrapers with architectural heights over 300 meters, or 984 feet—three-fourths of which were built in the last decade. And plenty more are on the way, with 20 expected to be completed in 2018 alone.

German architect Ole Scheeren’s 1,030-foot MahaNakhon—currently the tallest tower in Thailand—will soon lose its top rank to a titan nearly twice its height. Now underway in Bangkok, the aptly named building—which will cost an estimated $600 million (20 billion Thai baht)—will reach 2,018 feet when it’s finished in 2021. Designed by Architects 49 Ltd., the 125-story edifice, also known as the Grand Rama 9 Tower, will be platinum-level LEED certified and contain offices and a 260-room luxury hotel, along with an observation level and a rooftop garden.
