A meeting regarding a proposed housing development in New River near Jenny Lin and the Interstate 17 Frontage roads was held at the Anthem Community Center on the evening of August 9.
The meeting was held to inform the community about the developers request to rezone the parcel from commercial to residential, making way for almost 300 new homes, and to gather feedback about the preliminary site plans.
About 100 residents from the New River, Desert Hills and Anthem areas attended the meeting mostly to voice their opposition to the rezoning, with many people raising concerns about safety, roads, schools and water issues.
The nearly 69-acre parcel was annexed into the City of Phoenix in 2017, and the developer New Hamburg Land Company, is now requesting the rezoning of the land with the density capped at 4.3 houses per acre, which would bring hundreds of new homes in the mostly rural community.
