A part of Pinal County history will come down Saturday, but it will pave the way for future growth.

The smelter stack at the Resolution Copper mine in Superior will be demolished Saturday morning, weather permitting. The stack will be imploded between 8 a.m. and noon. Engineers say the stack will fall as a tree would when cut down.

If weather conditions don’t allow the implosion, Resolution Copper will attempt to demolish the stack each day, dependent on weather, until it is successful.

The town of Superior will set up a designated viewing area for residents and visitors along a section of Main Street adjacent to the West Plant property boundary. This section of Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic on the morning of the stack demolition.
