Meritage CEO rallies Arizona homebuilders to support affordable housing fund

Steve Hilton is putting his money where his mouth is.

When the chairman and CEO of Scottsdale-based Meritage Homes Corp. (NYSE: MTH) is not busy building affordable homes across the country, he’s lobbying homebuilders to contribute to the newly created Arizona Housing Fund to address the state’s affordable housing problem.

The idea started a year ago when Hilton was having lunch with an old high school buddy, Howard Epstein, founder of the new Arizona Housing Fund, a component fund of the Phoenix-based Arizona Community Foundation.

“It really was his idea to figure out how the real estate industry, and the housing industry specifically, could help with the affordable housing problem we have in Arizona,” Hilton said.
