Scottsdale and Gilbert rank among the top cities in the country for remote workers.

New research by e-commerce and software firm Volusion ranked U.S. cities by the proportion of workers who work remotely.

Scottsdale is second among mid-size U.S. cities with 14.4 percent of its workers doing their jobs remotely. The number of remote jobs in Scottsdale has increased by 17.1 percent the past five years, according to Austin-based Volusion.

Gilbert is third on that list with 9.8 percent of its employment base working remotely, according to Volusion.  Frisco, Texas tops the list with 14.7 percent of its workers in the remote category. Chandler comes at 11th and Peoria 14th on the list.

Nationally, there are 8.2 million remote workers in the U.S. accounting for 5.2 percent of the total workforce.

The growth of remote workers impacts commercial real estate in particular the type and amount of office space needed. Metro Phoenix and other markets have seen significant growth in co-working space aimed at less traditional jobs and tenants.

Among large cities, Mesa ranks 10th and Phoenix ranks 14th with 6.8 percent and 6.3 percent of their workers doing their jobs remotely, respectively. Mesa’s remote worker levels have increased 61.9 percent the past five years while Phoenix has seen a 37 percent gain over five years, according to Volusion.

Atlanta tops the list with 9.8 percent of its employment base working remotely.
