Scottsdale, Gilbert and Buckeye will see new mayors elected in August as top leaders face term limits or have opted not to run again.
Other Phoenix-area cities could see new mayors and council members as a slate of seats will be on the Aug. 4 ballot.
Tempe is the only city that already held its 2020 election. Tempe voters in March elected Corey Woods, who will be sworn in as mayor in July.
Monday was the deadline for candidates to file to appear on the August ballot.
Here’s a look at who filed in cities and towns across metro Phoenix:
Avondale
Everyone running for office in Avondale will be unopposed.
Six-year Mayor Kenn Weise has sat on the City Council since 2006. Weise helped guide the City Council through the aftermath of the Great Recession and has bolstered the city’s reputation for affordable housing.
Candidates running for council include:
- Vice Mayor Pat Dennis, who was first elected to the City Council in 2016. Dennis is a member of the Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority board of directors. Before moving to Avondale, she sat on the Peoria City Council.
- Incumbent Mike Pineda was first elected to the City Council in 2016. Pineda is a faculty member at Estrella Mountain Community College, where he teaches business courses.
- Incumbent Veronica Malone was first elected to the City Council in 2016. Malone works as a special project technician for the Littleton Elementary School District, which spans Avondale and Tolleson.
