The city of Mesa is looking at relaxing some requirements for ground level spaces in new and renovated buildings in the downtown Main Street area.
The aim is to be more flexible to attract more development, businesses and residents to downtown Mesa.
The Mesa Planning Commission will look at allowing offices, condos and apartments on the ground floors of buildings larger than 100,000 square feet. As much as 50 percent of ground floor space could be slated for offices, residential units and other commercial uses under the proposals.
Currently, Mesa requires those ground floor space in the downtown area be geared more toward retail, restaurants, coffee shops aimed at activating the Main Street area.
The Planning Commission is scheduled to hear a presentation on the change at its meeting today. The panel will potentially make recommendations to the Mesa City Council on the changes.
