Sen. Kyrsten Sinema backs resolution condemning Trump for use of force against protesters

U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema joined her Democratic colleagues on Tuesday in an attempt to condemn President Donald Trump for the use of force against demonstrators near the White House who peacefully protested the death of George Floyd and police brutality.

The use of force on Monday in Lafayette Square allowed Trump to walk from the White House to the fire-damaged St. John’s Church for a photo opportunity. 

“The right to protest peacefully is guaranteed by our Constitution and is exactly what leaders across the country have urged Americans to do,” Sinema, D-Ariz., said in a written statement on Tuesday. “The actions taken against peaceful demonstrators in Lafayette Square violated Americans’ Constitutional rights — and the politically charged comments from the White House sowed more division, instead of bringing Americans together. 

“Our forefathers fought and lost their lives for our freedoms, and we as Americans must protect and honor them now.”
