The Arizona Diamondbacks took the field on Friday for the first time as baseball’s unprecedented summer training camps got under way across the country. The Diamondbacks worked out both at Chase Field and at their spring complex at Salt River Fields, starting a three-week process that MLB hopes leads to a 60-game regular season starting July 23 or 24.
Here’s how the day unfolded downtown:
12:55 p.m.: Roof closed, masks in place
Lefty Robbie Ray and right-hander Taylor Clarke throw off the mound in the home and visitors’ bullpens, the first sign of activity for any Diamondbacks player. They were followed on the mound by lefty Alex Young and righthander Hector Rondon.
A little more than half of the Diamondbacks’ 60-player pool will work out at Chase Field, with the rest at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale.
2 p.m.: Feels like typical day at camp
