The influx of development on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, especially along Loop 101, has been decades in the making as tribal leadership saw a way to diversify funding for government services.
In the 1970s and 1980s, tribal leadership and community members, comprising both the Pima and Maricopa tribes, had planning meetings to discuss what community members wanted the community to look like in the future. When the Pima Freeway portion of the Loop 101 was planned and built in the 1990s, tribal leadership at the time successfully advocated that it go through the community, giving the community frontage on both sides.
