Goodyear Councilman Gary Gelzer dies

Gary Gelzer, a Goodyear councilman and longtime civic volunteer, died Saturday after a battle with cancer.

City officials made the announcement Monday.

Gelzer, 63, was an interim appointee for the council seat left vacant by former Councilman Frank Cavaliere, who resigned in March 2011.

Councilman Gelzer was a retired Navy officer and business executive.

Gelzer was as a cheerful friend, a fierce debater and champion for Goodyear, fellow city council members said.
