One could argue in today’s economy, anything that encourages consumer spending is good. But we should say “no thanks” to the black mark Wal-Mart decision to kick off its “Black Friday” on Thanksgiving Day, a total disregard for what Thanksgiving is all about.
According to the American Dialect Society, the Philadelphia Police Department in 1965 gave the Friday after Thanksgiving Day the name Black Friday. It did not refer to this specific day with fondness or endearment. Instead, Philadelphia experienced crowds in center city, traffic jams and over-crowded sidewalks as shoppers mobbed the downtown stores.
Wal-Mart will start its first Black Friday sale at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, two hours earlier than last year. It then will have two more rounds of sales events, including a 10 p.m. sale and another sale at 5 a.m.
